Yevgen Ivanov, aka Jake Chernobyl, was born and raised in Odessa, a beautiful Ukranian port city on the Black Sea. Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union when Yevgen was born. As a child of the 80’s, he lived through Perestroika and witnessed the chaos brought about by the crumbling social, economic, and political institutions around him.
After elementary school, Yevgen studied at the Grekov Art School for four years until the age of 14. As the word around him changed, his pragmatic parents put his art education on hold. He attended 4 years of medical college, After working as a paramedic for 3 years in Odessa, he decided it was time to live the life which he envisioned for himself.
Inspired by artists like Laurie Anderson, David Bowie, Madonna, Bjork, Portishead, Dead Can Dance, Nine Inch Nails, Mappelthorpe, LaChappel, Pierre et Gilles, he exhibited and performed his art in galleries and performance spaces in Odessa and the Ukranian capital, Kiev.
For 5 years he pursued a theatrical career in Moscow and St. Petersburg, auditioning every summer with the Moscow Art Theater, the Gerasmiov Institute of Cinematography, the Russion State Institute of Performing Arts, Leningrad State Institute of Theater, Music, and Cinematography.
Rejected buy no defeated, Yevgen moved to Kiev, where he worked as a director’s assistant at a music & commercial video production company, Kryla.
Unknown to Yevgen, a friend entered him into the American green card lottery. As luck would have it, he won. Within 6 months and with $150 in pocket, he set off to start a new life. The rest is his story.
